The county was established in 1818 and was named after one of only three men from Georgia that took part in the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. The land of Walton County was initially developed for large cotton plantations. As a result, it had a large number of slaves until the mid-19th century when it was abolished. Since then African Americans have fought hard for equal rights where a significant portion continues to call Walton home.

Tucker Door and Trim and Leggett & Platt Corporation also employ a fair amount of people in the region. A southeast Walmart Distribution Center is also situated in Walton.
