Waller County is based in east-central Texas, just west of Houston. It is not far from Sam Houston National Forest (to the northeast). The county has a population of 43,200 and a total land size of 518 square miles. Waller was established in 1873, and is named after an individual that signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. The county seat is Hempstead.
Waller County is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area in Texas. Though it is not quite considered a suburb of Houston, Waller is only 55 miles away and parts of the big city can get reached in about an hour of driving time.
Waller County is home to a historical black college in Prairie View A&M University. The university dates back to 1876, which makes it the second oldest public higher learning institution in Texas. The Panthers compete in Division I athletics via the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Additionally, Prairie View A&M University is consistently recognized as serving as one of the leading institutions in the United States for producing African-American engineers and architects. It also offers a wide range of STEM degrees. The primary campus is located in Prairie View, which is often nicknamed “The Hill” by locals. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful campuses in the state.
Hempstead is the largest city in Waller County with a population of 5,770. It is located at a critical junction between U.S. Highway 290, Texas State Highway 159, and Texas State Highway 6. Hempstead has a reputation for producing some of the finest tasting watermelons in the country. There is an annual festival each year that celebrates the the county tradition in July.
Hempstead, along with other parts of Waller County, is beginning to demonstrate rich growth over the last several decades. There are many forecasters that contribute the recent surge in population to Waller County’s proximity to Houston. The current economy is centralized primarily on government operations, shipping, and industrial industries.
Igloo Corporation is another major employer in Waller County. The company manufacturers cooling and portable refrigeration products. It is located in unincorporated land between Katy and Brookshire. Goya Foods is another noteworthy employers with offices that are also located outside Brookshire.
Waller County supports four different school districts: Hempstead Independent School District, Katy Independent School District, Waller Independent School District, and Royal Independent School District. Houston Executive Airport is situated in the county, between Katy and Brookshire. Skydive Houston Airport is also located in Waller. Meanwhile, George Bush Intercontinental Airport is also not far from Waller (IAH), approximately an hour away.
In addition to Hempstead and Prairie View, Waller County also contains the cities of Katy (population 14,100), Brookshire (population 4,700), and Waller (population 2,330).
