Walker County is located in eastern Texas. The Huntsville Independent School District and Huntsville Memorial Hospital are also considered major employers in Walker.
Sam Houston State continues the reputation of Walker County being a base for upholding the law, as its criminal justice program is very prestigious. Sam Houston State was created in 1879, designating it as the third oldest public university in the state that remains in operation. SHSU reports an enrollment of more than 20,000 students. Its programs are often ranked in U.S. News & World Report.
The campus in Huntsville is renown for its beauty, full of gorgeous oak trees based on 315 acres in the downtown area. Sam Houston State University is known as a substantial contributor to teaching and research. It has a 1,600 acre research farm and rodeo arena. The campus also highlights a planetarium and observatory, even an 18-hole golf course. The Bearkats also compete in Division I athletics.
Huntsville State Park is located in Walker County. The 2,000-plus state park is just southwest of the city. As a result, it is a popular attraction for locals. The beautiful scenery is dominated by shortleaf pine and loblolly pine trees. There are over 200 species of birds that inhabit the park, as well as fox squirrels, raccoons, armadillos, and white-tailed deer. Lake Raven is available to fish with bluegill, catfish, crappie, and bass the most common types of species. Some locals have even reported alligator sightings.
Walker County manages most of the northwestern portion of Sam Houston National Forest. It is one of only four national forests in the state of Texas. Sam Houston National Forest is popular given that it exists just 50 miles north of Houston. Hiking is one of the most common activities in the park. The 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail is a sight to behold. Camping and boating are also popular in Sam Houston National Forest.
