Union County is situated in a convenient spot in northern Georgia. The northern boundary of the county is part of the Georgia and North Carolina state line. Union County is also to the southeast of Tennessee and is just to the west of South Carolina. As a result, Union is considered a great place to live if you have friends or family in surrounding states.

Union County has a population of 21,360 and the total area is 329 square miles. It was founded in 1832 and the county seat is Blairsville. Union is adjacent to six other counties in the United States. Two of the counties (Cherokee and Clay) are in North Carolina and exist to the north of Union. Meanwhile, fellow Georgia counties Towns (to the east), Fannin (to the west), and White and Lumpkin counties (to the south) are connected to Union County.

The region also oversees a significant portion of Chattahoochee National Forest. The Blue Ridge Ranger District is managed by six counties in Georgia, including Union County. Union manages nearly 100,000 acres in its own right, demonstrating the often overlooked size of the national forest.

Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest is divided into two different areas: eastern and western forests. The combined total area of the national forest is 866,470 acres. The territory is home to a number of wildlife species including hummingbirds, sparrows, blackbirds, ducks, hawks, owls, and eagles as well as beavers, otters, bobcats, foxes, deer, coyotes, and black bears. Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest is also the host to the Blue ghost firefly which leaves behind a mysterious blue glow. Sportsmen are gifted with over 2,200 miles of rivers and streams for fishing. There are also over 450 miles of hiking trails. The beginning of the 2,174 Appalachian Trail starts within its boundaries.

Blairsville is the county seat and largest town in Union County. Blairsville has a population of just 650 people. It was established in 1832, and named after an American Revolutionary war hero. Blairsville, along with neighboring Dahlonega, are known as two of the first sites in the U.S. for the discovery of gold. The precious mineral which has been exported to various parts of the U.S. and world is renowned for being “the yellowest gold” in existence.

Union County hosts a variety of special events each year. The Sorghum Festival is held annually on the second and third weekend of October. It celebrates the sorghum harvest and presents a mountainous vibe with live bluegrass music and clogging. Additionally, Union County hosts The Green Bean Festival. It takes place in late-July and features eating contests, canning contests, parade, fresh produce, crafts, and a beauty pageant. The Spring Arts and Crafts Festival is also a must-visit for fans of these types of events. It takes place in May and features artists from all over Georgia.

Union County has a number of other fun things to do for locals. Lake Nottely is a popular weekend getaway. Locals also like to embark on parts of the famous Appalachian Trail with elevation gains from 2,500 to 4,500 feet. Brasstown Bald is a gorgeous place to take in the scenery. Butternut Creek Golf Course is the most popular public course in Union.
