Rusk County is based in northeastern Texas. The portion of the state is fairly rural and open, with a few small lakes in the area. The county is directly south of Interstate 20 which travels west to Dallas and east to Shreveport, Louisiana. The county has a population of 53,330 and total area of 938 square miles. The county seat is Henderson.
Rusk County is part of the Longview TX metropolitan area and was created in 1843. It was named after Thomas Jefferson Rusk, former secretary of war for the Republic of Texas. The county had its boom during the 1930s when oil was discovered in the county. In fact, the population nearly doubled during that time period.
The territory continues to remain a rich source of natural energy. Rusk County is one of five counties in the state that is part of the East Texas Oil Field. It also prohibited the sale of alcohol until 2012, when it passed legislation to allow the sales of beer and wine in Henderson.
Henderson is the largest city in the county and has a population of 13,715 people. Henderson is named after the first Governor of Texas and has long been the crossroads for major transportation hubs in northeast Texas. There are multiple major highways that travel through Rusk County including U.S. Route 259, U.S. Route 79, Texas State Highway 64, Texas State Highway 43, and Texas State Highway 42.
Henderson has remained relatively close knit among locals. Each year the small city hosts the Heritage Syrup Festival in November. The popular festival attracts people from all over the state as it celebrates eastern Texas and its tradition of syrup making. Additionally, Henderson hosts the annual East Texas Sacred Harp Convention in August.
For a small town/city Henderson is known for having a vibrant and artistic downtown district. It features historical architecture that dates back prior to the American Civil War with some of the homes dating back to the 1880s. The downtown area is incredibly scenic with numerous specialty stores and dining options.
New London (population 1,000) and Mount Enterprise (population 450) are two other noteworthy communities within Rusk County. Meanwhile, the communities of Kilgore (population 13,000), Overton (population 2,550), Tatum (population 1,385), Easton (population 510), and Reklaw (population 400) are all partly in Rusk and partly in another county in the region. The climate in Rusk is noted for being hot and humid in the summer. Springs and falls are generally mild. The same is true of the winters which is why many people like avoiding snow and freezing conditions found further north.
Rusk County is home to several former pro football players including Drew Coleman, Joe Delaney, and Rickey Dudley. Additionally, entertainers like Sandy Duncan, Ricky Lynn Gregg, and Archie Bell are from the county as well.
