Randall County exists in northern Texas as part of the southern portion of the Texas panhandle. The county has a population of 120,725 and total area of 922 square miles. Randall was established in 1876, yet not fully organized until 1889. It is named after Horace Randal, a Confederate soldier who perished at the Battle of Jenkins Ferry. The county seat is Canyon.
The area is considered part of the Amarillo metropolitan area in northern Texas. The southern half of Amarillo is part of Randall County, while more southern communities like Canyon are a short drive (19 miles from downtown Amarillo). Additionally, the county oversees the management of two crucial public open spaces. These include Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Palo Duro Canyon State Park. JA Ranch also had land in Randall in addition to five other counties in the region.
Randall County shares responsibility for Amaraillo along with Potter County. Meanwhile, Canyon is the most significant city in Randall that is completely within its boundaries. Canyon is a small city with a population of just 13,300 and is quite a bit more low key and quiet compared to neighboring Amaraillo to the north.
Canyon is most noteworthy for being the home of West Texas A&M University. The university was previously known as West Texas State. The campus is part of the Texas A&M University System and is considered selective with an acceptance rate of just 67.4 percent. West Texas A&M University features 60 undergraduate programs and nearly 40 masters programs. It is also known as a “military friendly” place for higher learning. The university has received honors from The Princeton Review, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, and National Geographic.
Canyon represents just 13,000 people out of nearly 121,000 in the county, with the bulk of residents existing in south Amarillo. Amarillo has a total population of nearly 200,000 people, which is split between Randall County and Potter County. All in all, Amarillo is the 14th largest city in Texas based on number of people. It is the largest city within the Texas Panhandle, and when combined with the surrounding metropolitan communities reaches a population of 276,000. It is expected to reach 310,000 people by 2020.
Amarillo is situated in the Llano Estacado region of Texas. In its early days ranching was popular along with being designated the “Helium Capital of the World”. Since the early days Amarillo has progressed to become known as “The Yellow Rose of Texas” along with “Rotor City, USA” for its manufacturing of the V-22 Osprey hybrid aircraft. The local economy is also supported by one of the largest meat-packing markets in the United States. Additionally, the only nuclear weapons manufacturer in the U.S. – Pantex – is located in Amarillo.
Despite having a reputation as a blue-collar big city Amarillo also has a number of attractions for tourists. The second largest canyon system in the nation behind the Grand Canyon – Palo Duro Canyon State Park – is just outside Amarillo. Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument is also within a short drive. Cadillac Ranch and Big Texas Steak Ranch are popular tourist stops located off Interstate 40. The Tri-State Fair & Rodeo is a huge draw each September.
