Pierce County is the second most populous county in the state of Washington behind King County. The area has more than 1,800 square miles and a population of 820,000 people. Tacoma is the most noteworthy city in the county though many other communities like Ashford, Buckley, Carbonado, Dupont, Eatonville, La Grande, Milton, Ortin, Vaughn and Wauna also have a presence within the area.

Pierce County is highlighted by the Mount Rainier Volcano. It represents the highest point in the beautiful Cascade Mountain Range. The volcano is still considered active and geologists expect to see an eruption at some point. The volcano hasn’t been active since 1854.

The land has a rich history. It was first inhabited by Nisqually, Puyallup, Squaxin, Muckleshoot, and Steilacoom Native Americans. The various tribes coexisted peacefully near water in present day Pierce County and utilized fishing as a source of trade. The territory was first discovered by Captain George Vancouver who sailed into the inland water. Pierce County was officially established in 1852 with the creation of fellow counties King and Jefferson.

Tacoma is the county seat of Pierce County. The city is located on the Puget Sound, just south of Seattle. The downtown area is accessible from Tacoma in 45 minutes of drive time. It is also in close proximity to Mount Rainier National Park which is about 60 miles to the northwest. The city is named after Mount Tahoma, which is on the same range as Mount Rainier.

Tacoma produces some of the finest glass art in the world. The city has a population of about 200,000 and likes to reflect its renowned glass art in everyday life. The vibrant city has an extremely diverse art and culture scene. Tacoma is also applauded for its beauty and location on Puget Sound. The numerous walkways have provided walking and biking access to a number of different districts and to nightlife destinations. All in all, it is the third largest city in Washington State.

The city has witnessed many recent developments including Tacoma Link – the first modern electric light rail service in the state. Its restored urban waterfront and revitalization of the 6th Avenue District has also contributed to Tacoma being named one of the most livable communities in the United States. In 2006, it received the honor of being one of the “most walkable” cities.

Tacoma, and surrounding Pierce County cities, are within a short drive of Mount Rainier National Park. Residents of Tacoma can reach the park entrance in a little over an hour. Part of the county is actually located within the national park boundary. All in all, the park has a territory of 953 kilometers. More than two million people visit the park each year.

Outdoor adventurists will also appreciate Northwest Trek Wildlife Park. The 72-acre park is located about an hour from Seattle. The wildlife park is not your conventional zoo with vast open spaces where more than 200 animals from North America roam. Point Defiance Park and Fort Nisqually are two other attractions in Pierce County that entice a lot of visitors.
