Okanogan County represents a massive part of Washington State. In fact, it is the largest county in Washington with 5,315 square miles of land. Okanogan County is located in north-central Washington. Its northern boundary is at the line between the United States and Canada border. The population of the county is 41,200.
The county is spread out. Okanogan County has its western borders that start at the end of Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. On the east end the county occupies half of the Colville Indian Reservation. Only a handful of small towns are scattered throughout its landscape. It shares borders with Lincoln, Ferry, Grant, Douglas, Skagit, Whatcom and Chelan counties. British Columbia, Canada is directly to the north.
Okanogan County was formed in 1888 after it separated from Stevens County. The word Okanogan translates to “a meeting place” according to Native Americans. Northern Okanogans first occupied the land where hunting was profitable. It was one of the last areas to be reached by settlers from the east. Today, agriculture, forestry and tourism are the main contributors to the local economy.
Omak is the largest town in Okanogan County with a population of about 5,000 people. Meanwhile, Okanogan (population 2,500) serves as the county seat. The town of Ruby held the honor previously but has since transformed into a ghost town. Approximately 20 percent of all residents in Okanogan County live in the greater Omak area.
Omak and Okanogan both have small populations. The communities are close knit and welcoming to tourists as it helps drive the local economy. There are a ton of outdoor recreation opportunities outside the towns that draw people from all over Washington.
The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest contains more than 4 million acres and is close to the communities of Okanogan County. The national forest area features a ton of hiking, camping and fishing opportunities. There are many water recreation sports too.
Pasayten Wilderness is not nearly as well as known to outsiders, yet locals like to come to these parts if they are looking to avoid any crowds. The wilderness is a protected area within Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. It is adjacent to the Ross Lake Recreation Area and North Cascades National Park. The views of the area are breathtaking.
The Sa Teekh Wa Trail begins in downtown Winthrop (population 400) and leads up to pine forest and the Chewuch River. It is a popular hike for families since it is only a one-mile round trip. Alta Lake State Park is another popular destination for families. The 180-acre park is common for camping. It is located in a mountainous pine forest as well as desert climate. The lake is about two miles long and anglers are known to catch trout.
Okanogan County tends to get overlooked due to its location in Washington State, yet it is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. There are opportunities to get out into the wild in every part of the county.
