Navarro County is based directly south of the Dallas and Fort Worth metropolitan area. The best way to reach Navarro County from Dallas, or vice versa, is via Interstate 45. The county is situated in a more rural part of Texas compared to the bustling metropolis north. Richland Chambers Reservoir is among its distinct features along with nearby Cedar Creek Reservoir.

Navarro County has a population of 47,735. The total area of the county is 1,086 square miles. Navarro was founded in 1846, from a section previously occupied by Robertson County. It is named after Jose Antonio Navarro, a Tejano leader who fought during the Texas Revolution. He also signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

The county seat of Navarro County is Corsicana. The city is considered part of the greater Dallas-Fort Worth combined statistical area despite being 55 miles away. Corsicana has a population of 23,770. It is named after the birthplace of Jose Antonio Navarro’s father. The city has a reputation for standing at the front of civil movements. The county was active on the Confederate side during the Civil War. Additionally, women’s groups have pushed for rights ever since the Corsicana Female Literary Institute was established in 1857. There is also a strong history of Jewish heritage and traditions.

Oil was discovered in Navarro County around the turn of the 20th century. In fact, the discovery was the first of its kind in Texas. Later, an even bigger oil field named Powell was tapped into for the first time in 1923. A third major discovery happened in 1956. Needless to say the county has profited from its production of oil since the 20th century. However, it is no longer its biggest employer as Russell Stover Candies, Guardian Industries, Corsicana Bedding, and Navarro Regional Hospital have since become some of its biggest.

Coriscana is home to Lake Halbert. It is close to Richland Chambers Reservoir, another popular weekend getaway for locals. Richland Chambers Reservoir is the third largest lake based on surface area in Texas. Richland Chambers Reservoir has 330 miles of shorelines tracing a distinct “Y” shaped lake. Fishing is popular at the man-made lake. White and hybrid striped bass are highly desirable along with largemouth bass, carp, blue and channel catfish, and crappie. Boating and swimming are also common one of the many nearby lakes.

Navarro County offers a moderate humid subtropical climate. Temperatures can spike to 95 degrees in the summer, and as low as 55 degrees in the middle of winter. Meanwhile, spring and fall are pleasant with temperatures in the mid-to-high 70s. Coriscana does get a significant amount to rainfall with averages close to 40 inches per year. As a result, leafy oak, magnolia, walnut, and pecan trees are commonly grown.

Coriscana has blossomed into an underrated downtown scene. There is a thriving performing arts community as well as plenty of live music. Downtown Corsicana also includes several eateries and coffee shops in historical buildings. Outdoor exercise is prevalent in Navarro County is a diverse system of walk/bike trails, parks, playgrounds, and skate lands. There is also an abundance of museums to celebrate the long history of the county.
