Stephen F. Austin State University was created in 1923. It is named after one of the founding fathers of Texas. A substantial amount of students relocate to Nacogdoches County from parts of Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth. All in all, 13,000 students attend the university. The Lumberjacks compete in NCAA Division I athletics in the Southland Conference. Its basketball program is historically good with two first-round wins in 2014 and 2016 March Madness tournaments.

Stephen F. Austin State University features more than 120 areas of study, including 80-plus undergraduate programs and 60 graduate degrees. Stephen F. Austin is well known for its Forestry and Agriculture program. It is appropriate considering East Texas has always been known for its timber production. The main campus is at 430 acres, and also includes a 642-acre agricultural research center. Furthermore, the southwestern section of the county is reserved for students to study forestry in a field study. Sam Rayburn Reservoir, which exists directly south of the county, is also utilized for research.

Public education in Nacogdoches is managed by the Nacogdoches Independent School District. Woden Independent School District also has a small footprint in southern Nacogdoches. The surrounding schools districts in Nacogdoches County include Douglass ISD, Garrison ISD, Central Heights ISD, and Cushing ISD. 

There are several popular attractions in Nacogdoches County. The Mast Arboretum is a point of interest. Millard’s Crossing Historic Village is a popular tourist attraction. Old Stone Fort Museum is another place that features the rich tradition of the county. There are several famous people from the county including Sam Houston, Clint Dempsey, Don Henley, and Ron Raines.

In addition to Nacogdoches, the county also includes the small towns of Garrison (population 895), Cushing (population 615), Appleby (population 475), and Chireno (population 385).
