Montgomery County is situated in east-central Texas. The population is estimated at 556,200. It is an increase from the 2010 census when the population was reported at just 455,750. As a result, Montgomery is growing rapidly. In fact, it is one of the fastest growing counties in not just Texas, but any state in the nation. The county had a growth spurt of 55 percent between 2000 and 2010.
Montgomery County was founded in 1837 and has a total area of 1,077 square miles. The county is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. Houston is only 40 miles south of Montgomery. Meanwhile, Sugar Land is 60 miles further south.
Conroe is the county seat. Like the rest of Montgomery County it has received an influx of people since the turn of the 21st century. The population of Conroe was 562,200 in the 2010 census. However, more recent estimates place the population close to 82,300 people. Conroe was actually designated as the fastest growing place in America from July 2015 to July 2016.
Conroe is well known for gaining in wealth and status through the lumber and oil industries. Forestry was the first main employer yet after oil was discovered in the 1930s, the city featured more millionaires per capital than any other city in the United States for a short amount of time.
The region of Montgomery County is scenic. Conroe exists along the southwest corner of the county and is part of the East Texas Piney Woods. Loblolly pine is the most popular type of tree though shortleaf pines are also common. The San Jacinto River also runs through the city before reaching Lake Conroe along the northern boundary of the county. Conroe also has a thriving downtown arts scene, including the iconic Crighton Theatre. Locals like to fish Lake Conroe for largemouth bass, bluegill, white bass, and channel catfish.
The Woodlands is the largest community in Montgomery County. The census designated place (CDP) exists south of Conroe along Interstate 45 traveling south toward Houston. The Woodlands is primarily located in Montgomery County though a portion of its residents reside in Harris County.
The population of The Woodlands is estimated at 116,280. It has doubled in number of people from the 2000 census. A large amount of the growth is attributed to The Woodlands outstanding location to Houston for work and play. The Woodlands initially started as a bedroom community though now has its own list of impressive employers including Chevron Phillips Chemical, Huntsman Corporation, Baker Hughes, Chicago Bridge & Iron Company, and McKesson Corporation. The Woodlands has received a Special Award for Excellence from the Urban Land Institute for its development over the last few decades.
The Woodlands has a ton of variety in terms of restaurants and entertainment. The Woodlands Mall is a popular place for shopping around Lake Woodlands. The community is divided into several villages, each with its own impressive list of attractions. The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival is a popular annual event that attracts people from all over the nation. The Woodlands Concert Band is a huge draw across the state of Texas.
