The 2019 $0 down, federal home loan limit for Mills County is $314,827.
Mills County is situated nearly square in the middle of Texas. The oddly shaped piece of land is located northwest of Austin and southwest of Dallas-Fort Worth. Mills County is small in terms of population. The number of residents is less than 5,000 people based on data collected from the most recent census. The total area of the county is larger at 750 square miles.
The territory is named after John T. Mills, a former justice of the Texas Supreme Court. Modern day Mills County was once occupied by Comanche and Apache Native Americans. It was discovered by Spanish explorers in the late-18th century. Later, migrants from the east coast began to settle around the 1850s. The county was officially created in 1887. It was established from chunks of land previously occupied by Brown, Hamilton, Comanche, and Lampassas counties.
Though Mills County has an intriguing history it is interesting to point out that oil was not discovered in the region until 1982. The county has not been known as a huge natural energy piece of land despite its proximity to the rest of oil-rich Texas.
Goldthwaite is the county seat. The small town has a population of nearly 1,900 people. The town is named after a former railroad official who was instrumental in bringing the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway to the region. Goldthwaite has always been regarded as a place of agricultural. There were a number of other products created in the area as well, including wool and mohair. Ranching of cattle and turkeys was also popular.
Goldthwaite receives a boost in the fall and winter because it has plenty of open space to offer for hunting. White-tailed deer are the most common type of animal hunted though there are other wildlife in pursuit. Goldthwaite City Park is a fun place to visit for families and conveniently located off Texas Highway 16 and U.S. Highway 183. Picnicking and swimming are popular activities.
The 9-hole municipal golf course is also open to the public year round. Old Jail Museum at Courthouse Square and the county Museum are fantastic places to brush up on the history of the area. There are many buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Courthouse Square. The city also owns and manages the Goldthwaite Municipal Airport. Public education is managed through the Goldthwaite Independent School District.
Mills County is connected to five counties in the state of Texas. Comanche County exists to the north, while Hamilton County is to the northeast and Brown County to the northwest. Two counties are along the southern end: San Saba County and Lampasas County.
Three primary highways travel through Mills County. These include State Highway 16 which ventures mostly north and south through Goldthwaite. U.S. Highway 183 also travels through Goldthwaite, yet opposite the path of State Highway 16. The other major highway in Mills County is U.S. Highway 84 which travels east of Goldthwaite to Waco, Texas.
