Madison County is based in east-central Texas. The property exists along the critical Interstate 45 which ventures north toward Dallas and Fort Worth (approximately 145 miles), and south toward Houston (approximately 105 miles). The population of Madison County is 13,665. The total land size of Madison County is 472 square miles. The county seat is Madisonville. Madison County was created in 1853. It is named after the fourth president of the United States – James Madison.
Madison County is clear to recognize thanks to three precise natural borders. The Trinity River exists on the east side of the county and serves as its boundary. On the other hand, the Navasota River exists on the west side and also creates a natural boundary. Meanwhile, the southern border is dignified by Bedias Creek, which separates the territory from Walker County.
Along with Interstate 45, the major thoroughfares in Madison County are U.S. Highway 190 (west of Madisonville) and State Highway 21 (east of Madisonville toward Midway). State Highway 75, State Highway OSR, and State Highway 90 also serve important functions for commerce.
Madisonville is the largest community in Madison County with a population of 4,400. The only other recognized town completely in the county is Midway (population 300). Normangee (population 685) has some of its residents in Madison though the majority of people from Normangee live in Leon County. Lastly, Madison has one unincorporated community called North Zulch.
Madisonville is serviced by the Madisonville Consolidated Independent School District. Normangee has its own school district shared between students of Madison County and Leon County. Normangee ISD is home to the Normangee High School Panthers. The Panthers won a state title in boys basketball in 2004.
Normangee is an important place for local jobs. The small town has several small businesses that include industries related to agriculture, health care, retail, and banking. Normangee is often recognized as being a leader in producing tractors. Two plants operate in Conroe, Texas and Navasota, Texas. R. Dean Lewis, former Vice President of Finance at Sam Houston State University and Lester Roloff (Baptist clergyman) are both from Madison County.
Madison County exists just north of Sam Houston National Forest. The national forest is one of four of its kind in Texas. Sam Houston National Forest has several units including Angelina, Sabine, and Davy Crockett. There are also two designated wetlands known as Lyndon B. Johnson National Grassland and Caddo National Grassland.
Hiking, camping, boating, fishing, and hunting are all popular at Sam Houston National Forest. The Lone Star Hiking Trail is an impressive feat which travels nearly 130 miles throughout the public land. Some hikers seek to complete the entire trail in multiple days while others travel in three major sections: Lake Conroe (40 miles), Stubblefield Recreation Area (60 miles), and Big Creek Scenic Area (30 miles). Sam Houston National Forest area also includes several developed campgrounds. Fishing is popular for black bass in the reservoirs of Lake Livingston and Lake Conroe.
