Texas Tech University provides more than 150 programs as well as 60 research centers and institutes. The Carnegie Foundation designates Texas Tech University for having “highest research activity”. The university has discovered important findings in the fields of epidemiology, grid computing, atmospheric sciences, and wind energy.
Texas Tech University competes in Division I athletics as members of the Big 12 Conference. The Red Raiders have a highly successful football program that has made more than 35 bowl appearance, among the Top 20 in the nation for that statistic. Additionally, the Red Raiders men’s basketball team reached the 2019 National Championship, where they lost in the final to Virginia University.
The Princeton Review has ranked Texas Tech University among the 125 Best Colleges in the Western United States. U.S. News & World Report has the school within the Top 100 for Best Public Schools. The Wall Street Journal ranked Texas Tech 18th for “graduate desirability for job recruiters”. Along with its athletics the campus also offers more than 500 student clubs and organizations.
In addition to its university, Lubbock County is also known for being the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world. Lubbock has also been selected as one of the premier places to start a small business in the country. Though cotton production is the primary industry in the county, there are other major employers including Texas Tech University, Covenant Health Systems, University Medical Center, Lubbock Independent School District, AT&T, and United Supermarkets.
Lubbock County has a massive Independence Day festival each year. It is one of the largest free events to attend in Texas. The Independence Day festival includes live music, parade, street fair, and Early Settlers’ Luncheon. Additionally, the South Plains Fair is a top draw for locals and people across the state as well. The National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration is another popular local event.
