Lubbock County is situated in northern Texas. It is close to the Texas Panhandle, and includes the city of Lubbock, Texas (which is also the county seat). The population of the county is 278,830 and the total land size is 900 square miles. 

Lubbock County was created in 1876, and later organized in 1891. The territory is named after Thomas Saltus Lubbock, a former Texas Ranger and Confederate soldiers. Lubbock County has its own metropolitan statistical area which also includes Crosby County and Lynn County.  

Lubbock is the 11th most populous city in Texas. It represents the vast majority of residents in Lubbock County with a population of 261,000. It helps make Lubbock one of the 100 biggest cities in the United States. Lubbock is part of Llano Estacado, one of the most prominent geographical locations in Texas. Meanwhile, the southern end of the city exists along the High Plains. 

Lubbock is rapidly growing. The estimated population for the 2020 census factors to include more than 327,000 people in the college town. Lubbock is nicknamed “Hub City” because it is the economic, educational, and health care hub between the Permian Basin and the Texas Panhandle. Texas Tech University is based out of Lubbock. 

The public research university was created in 1923, and was known as Texas Technological College until 1969. Texas Tech University has the seventh largest student enrollment of any college in Texas. Texas Tech University provides more than 150 programs as well as 60 research centers and institutes. The Carnegie Foundation designates Texas Tech University for having “highest research activity”. The university has discovered important findings in the fields of epidemiology, grid computing, atmospheric sciences, and wind energy. 

Texas Tech University competes in Division I athletics as members of the Big 12 Conference. The Red Raiders have a highly successful football program that has made more than 35 bowl appearance, among the Top 20 in the nation for that statistic. Additionally, the Red Raiders men’s basketball team reached the 2019 National Championship, where they lost in the final to Virginia University. 

The Princeton Review has ranked Texas Tech University among the 125 Best Colleges in the Western United States. U.S. News & World Report has the school within the Top 100 for Best Public Schools. The Wall Street Journal ranked Texas Tech 18th for “graduate desirability for job recruiters”. Along with its athletics the campus also offers more than 500 student clubs and organizations. 

In addition to its university, Lubbock County is also known for being the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world. Lubbock has also been selected as one of the premier places to start a small business in the country. Though cotton production is the primary industry in the county, there are other major employers including Texas Tech University, Covenant Health Systems, University Medical Center, Lubbock Independent School District, AT&T, and United Supermarkets.

Lubbock County has a massive Independence Day festival each year. It is one of the largest free events to attend in Texas. The Independence Day festival includes live music, parade, street fair, and Early Settlers’ Luncheon. Additionally, the South Plains Fair is a top draw for locals and people across the state as well. The National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration is another popular local event.
