George West is named after an important cattle rancher in the area. It also has a reputation as the “Storytelling Capital of Texas”. Why? George West hosts the annual George West Storyfest. The popular event features live music, cowboy poetry, and – of course – storytelling. Part of the reason George West has gained this reputation is because it is the former home of author and folklorist J. Frank Dobie.
The small town is known as a ranching community with a cowboy mentality. George West was incorporated in 1946. The town uses the George West Independent School District to oversee public education. The County Courthouse is also based downtown. George West is one of the few American cities with a full name. The others are Phil Campbell, Alabama, Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, Carol Stream, Illinois, and Albert Lea, Minnesota.
