Live Oak County exists in southern Texas. It is halfway between San Antonio (88 miles) and Corpus Christi (65 miles). The population of the county was 11,530 in the last census. The total area is 1,080 square miles. The county was named after the distinct tree of the same name which exists within the region. The county seat is George West.
Live Oak County is serviced by Interstate 37, one of the most important roads in South Texas. I-37 connects travelers from Live Oak County to San Antonio (to the north) and Corpus Christi (to the south). Drivers can also reach the Gulf of Mexico via I-37. U.S. Highway 59 is the most important west and east route in the county. It passes through George West, like U.S. Highway 281, yet in the other direction. U.S. Highway 281 is an important north and south highway that connects to I-37 as well as State Highway 72.
George West is the largest town in the county with a population of 2,525. Three Rivers (population 1,880) is another noteworthy town. The village of Pernitas Point (population 270) is also part of Live Oak along with Jim Wells County. There are several unincorporated settlements in Live Oak County including Dinero, Ray Point, Oakville, Swinney Switch, and Whitsett.
George West is named after an important cattle rancher in the area. It also has a reputation as the “Storytelling Capital of Texas”. Why? George West hosts the annual George West Storyfest. The popular event features live music, cowboy poetry, and – of course – storytelling. Part of the reason George West has gained this reputation is because it is the former home of author and folklorist J. Frank Dobie.
The small town is known as a ranching community with a cowboy mentality. George West was incorporated in 1946. The town uses the George West Independent School District to oversee public education. The County Courthouse is also based downtown. George West is one of the few American cities with a full name. The others are Phil Campbell, Alabama, Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, Carol Stream, Illinois, and Albert Lea, Minnesota.
Though Live Oak County is rural there is plenty to do in the area. About half of Choke Canyon Reservoir and Choke Canyon State Park is in the county. Lake Corpus Christi is on the opposite side of the county (southeast) yet is another popular area attraction for residents. Choke Canyon State Park exists near Frio River where it is impounded by a dam used to create Choke Canyon Reservoir. The man-made lake consists of over 25,600 acres. Fishing is popular for largemouth bass and catfish.
Live Oak County is connected to seven other territories in Texas. Karnes County and Atascosa County are adjacent to the north. San Patricio County, Jim Wells County, and Duval County exist to the south. Meanwhile, McMullen County is west of Live Oak County and Bee County is to the east.
