Lee County, Texas (FedHome Loan Centers)

The 2019 $0 down, federal home loan limit for Lee County is $314,827.

Lee County is based in east-central Texas and has a population of 16,615. The total area of the county is 634 square miles. It was created in 1874 and was named after famous Confederate Army General – Robert E. Lee. The county seat is Giddings.

Lee County is a rural piece of land in Texas yet not far from Austin. In fact, residents of Lee can reach Austin in about an hour. However, with that being said the county is not commonly connected with the greater Austin, TX metropolitan statistical area. The area offers a quieter, slower pace of living compared to the busy streets of Austin.

The county has three major highways. U.S. Highway 77 goes directly down the middle of Lee County in a north and south direction. It passes through the important communities of Giddings, Lincoln, Lexington, and Tanglewood. State Highway 21 passes through the middle of the county in mostly an east and west direction through Lincoln. U.S. Highway 290 is the third major thoroughfare and passes through Giddings. The road eventually reaches Austin to the west.

Lee County is connected to six other territories in Texas including Milam County, Williamson County, and Burleson County (to the north), Fayette County and Bastrop County (to the south), and Washington County (to the east). Giddings is the biggest city in Lee with a population of 5,665. Lexington is recognized as a town and has a population of 1,285. There are several unincorporated communities in the county including Lincoln, Old Dime Box, Corinth, Hills, Dime Box, and Serbin.

Giddings exists at an important intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and U.S. Highway 290. The slogan for the community is “Experience Hometown Hospitality”. It certainly reflects it and is a contrast to the city life of Austin. Giddings was created in 1871, a few years before Lee County became official. The Houston and Texas Central Railway helped spur early growth. Jabez Deming Giddings, who the city is named after, was instrumental in bringing the railroad to the town.

The area has long been known as an important cotton growing territory in Texas. Along with the rest of Texas it began to get used for oil and gas extraction in the 20th century. There was a major oil boom in the area recently in the 1980s. However, activities disappeared nearly as quick as they arrived by the end of the 80s.

Today the primary employers of Lee County include the Giddings Seed Laboratory and U.S. Post Service. The Giddings Independent School District is another important employer. The Texas Youth Commission operates its own State School in Giddings.

Lee County is acknowledged for having some of the best barbecue thanks to City Meat Market in the nation. Wendish heritage is also celebrated in Giddings with an annual event hosted by the Texas Wendish Heritage Society. The Giddings Times and News and Lexington Leader report on local events.
