LaPorte County is situated in Northern Indiana and the northern boundary shares borders with Michigan and Lake Michigan. The county has a population of 111,500 and has a land size of 614 square miles, making it one of the larger counties in the state. LaPorte is grouped with other Northwestern Indiana communities as well as parts of Michigan and Illinois to form the greater Chicago metropolitan area.

The largest city in LaPorte County is Michigan City, while La Porte serves as the county seat. The county was created in 1832. La Porte is French for “the door” or “the port”. It is fitting to the territory given its proximity to Lake Michigan and other places that can be accessed by water such as Chicago, Illinois.

Incidentally enough, French travelers report that when they first discovered the land known as present day LaPorte County they were amazed to find a natural opening in the dense forests surrounding it that was perfectly formed to fit a larger city. The vision became a reality and the county was developed in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Locals are divided over the correct spelling of the area, “La Porte” versus “LaPorte”. Regardless, it has become a popular destination for people seeking to live outside Chicago or Detroit, yet still very close to these northern cities. LaPorte County is also just to the west of South Bend, Indiana – home of the University of Notre Dame. The county is also home to three of its own higher learning institutions: Brown Mackie College, Ivy Tech Community College and Purdue University Northwest. The prestigious Parsons Horological Institute was originally established in the county yet has since been relocated to be part of Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.

The estimated population of the City of La Porte was recently bumped up to nearly 22,000, an increase of nearly a thousand people from the 2010 census. La Porte is one of two principal cities in the county along with Michigan City.

The city is home to the Advance-Rumely tractor company which originally built steam engines and early tractors. La Porte has pop culture value, having served as the setting for several different Hollywood films including “A Piece of Eden”, “Treadmill” and “Providence”. Other points of interest include the Indiana and Michigan Avenues Historic District, La Porte Little Theatre Club and Marion Ridgeway Polygonal Barn.

Michigan City is the other prominent community of LaPorte County. It is the biggest city in the area with a population of 31,500. Michigan City is located nearly halfway between Chicago (50 miles to the east) and South Bend (40 miles to the west). The city is also close to Indiana Dunes National Park which attracts visitors from around the country. Therefore, tourism helps drive the local economy. Another distinctive landmark of Michigan City is a lighthouse that refers to the sailing events hosted in the community as well as the 1987 Pan American Games. The lighthouse is the only functioning lighthouse in all of Indiana.

Additionally, Michigan City features an art center and a zoo – two of the more popular attractions for families. The city also features one of the oldest municipal bands in the nation and supports free concerts. Michigan City has also been nicknamed “singing sand” due to traces of sand that slide down from nearby Mount Baldy in Indiana Dunes National Park. Gamblers may also try their luck on the largest riverboat casino in the state – the Blue Chip Casino.
