Jefferson County is a part of the Olympic Peninsula and is situated between the counties of Clallam, Mason, Kitsap and Grays Harbor. This northwestern county houses a little over 30,000 people according to the most recent census. Its area is broad with a total area of 2,183 square mileage. The county seat is Port Townsend.
The area is by the Admiralty Inlet and harbor leading into Seattle and Vancouver. The county is connected to Kitsap County via the Hood Canal Bridge. Ferries that are operated in the region can also take passengers from Keystone-Port Townsend to Whidbey Island.
Jefferson County was first discovered by outside settlers in 1775. Captain George Vancouver oversaw an exploration that charted waters of the Strait of Juan De Fuca and Puget Sound. The county was officially established in 1852. Farming, logging, sawmills, shipbuilding and canneries took off as the main industries during the 20th Century.
Port Townsend is the only incorporated city in Jefferson County. The community has a population of 10,000 is located about 40 miles northwest of Seattle. In addition to providing some of the finest views of the Pacific Ocean, Port Townsend has a rich history. In the city it is not uncommon to discover Victorian buildings that date back to the 19th Century. Many remain in good condition.
Port Townsend, and the surrounding Jefferson County, are host to a number of different cultural events. It is also popular for outdoor enthusiasts, especially those interested in water activities. Locals enjoy fishing, boating, canoeing and water skiing. There is so much to do outside and the cultural setting of Port Townsend also contributes to many events within the city.
Jefferson County is one of three counties on the Olympic Peninsula that occupies land related to Olympic National Park. The central part of Olympic National Park is within Jefferson County territory. It supports parts of its views to the Pacific Ocean, as well as inland territory that includes the Olympic Mountains and Hood Canal. The national park features a great combination of sunny beaches, dense rainforests and snow-capped mountains. Hurricane Ridge is accessed by thousands of visitors each year.
Jefferson County does have a solid tourism industry due to its proximity to Olympic National Park. It is also close to the Hoh Rainforest which is located inside the interior of the park. The lush rainforest is one of the largest in the United States. It was formed by glaciers many centuries ago. Today the Hoh River flows through it. Coast Douglas-fir, Sitka Spruce, Vine Maple and Western Red cedar are found in Hoh Rainforest and date back more than 1,000 years.
Another popular attraction among locals is Ruby Beach. The beach is within the Jefferson County boundary and visited by thousands each year. Ruby Beach is about 30 miles from the town of Forks. It features a rare pink sand that gets its coloration from small particles of the garnet.
