Howard County is located in Central Indiana. It exists in the middle of an important triangular area of transport from I-65 to the west and I-69 to the east traveling to and from Indianapolis, as well as State Highways 25 and 24 heading from Lafayette and Fort Wayne. Howard is about 60 miles due north of Indianapolis.
Howard County has a population of 82,750. The total area of the county is 294 square miles making it one of the smaller counties in Indiana in terms of land size. The county was renamed from Richardville County in 1844. The county seat is Kokomo.
Kokomo is the 13th largest city in Indiana. The population of the city is 46,115, a small increase in number of people compared to statistics reported during the 2000 census. Kokomo represents more than half of all the population of Howard County.
The name of the city derives from the Miami tribal term Ma-Ko-Ko-Mo for “Chief Kokomo”. Howard County has strong connections to early indigenous people. It received steady growth from settlers after a railroad line was constructed between Indianapolis and the region. Howard had a natural gas boom in the mid-1880s. The manufacturing of automobile parts became another reliable source for the economy in early development. In fact, it’s engineering and manufacturing ingenuity led to Kokomo being nicknamed “City of Firsts”.
Kokomo continues to serve as one of the leaders in automobile production and a large number of local residents are employed in this sector. The city endured a difficult time period during the 2007 recession, yet it has been climbing back ever since. In fact, after being named by Forbes as one of America’s Fastest Dying Towns in 2008, it was named by the same publication in 2011 as one of the “Best Cities for Jobs”. The unemployment rate has been in rapid decline and major employers include companies like FCA US LLC, Aptiv, Delphi Technologies, GM Components Holdings LLC and Haynes International.
In addition to being a revitalized economic hub, Kokomo is also home to many sites of historical value and entertainment options. The Howard County Historical Society owns some prominent houses in the area and has helped preserve several important buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.
The residents of Howard County also appreciate the outdoors. The area is home to several parks including Foster Park. The Kokomo Country Club is popular with locals for challenging golf. The Elwood Haynes Museum is near Highland Park and a great place to take families. The Chief Ma-Ko-Ko-Mo Burial and Monument is another important landmark to Howard.
Every year Howard County is home to Haynes-Apperson Festival held each year around Independence Day. The county also hosts the annual WeberFest and Kokomo Con. The county has also supported numerous minor league baseball teams. It is currently the home of the Kokomo City of Fists Roller Girls and Kokomo Jackrabbits. Highland Park Stadium, Kokomo Municipal Stadium, Memorial Gym and Kokomo Speedway host a variety of sporting events.
Lastly, Howard County features three live theaters and many local art clubs. Kokomo is home to satellite campuses of the University of Indiana and Indiana Wesleyan. The Markland Mall is the most popular shopping area in Kokomo and arguably in all of Howard. It underwent major renovations in 2011 in order to transition into an outdoor mall.
