Hendricks County is situated in Central Indiana. It is a suburban county of Indianapolis located directly to the west of the downtown area. The county has a population of 145,500 people. It is the third largest county within the Indianapolis-Carmel-Anderson metropolitan area. Hendricks is also the second fastest growing county in Indiana and among the top 100 fastest growing counties in the United States.

The county has a total area of 409 square miles. Hendricks County was established in 1824. It shares boundaries with other prominent counties in Indiana including Marion County, Boone County and Putnam County. Hendricks is characterized by a comparative climate to the rest of the Indianapolis metro area and the state of Indiana collectively.

Danville is the county seat, though not the largest city in Hendricks County. The reported population from the last census was 9,000 people though the city is growing like many parts of Hendricks. The population is up 2,500 people since statistics were gathered in 2000 and 2010, respectfully. Current estimates have the population much closer to 10,000 people.

Danville was founded the same year as Hendricks County was formed. It is a historical small city just outside the city limits of Indianapolis with several important pieces of architecture. Visitors appreciate the historic Main Street District. The Ora Adams House, Leander Campbell House and the Wilson-Courtney House. The Dr. Jeremiah and Ann Jane Depew House are also popular attractions.

The Hendricks County Historical Museum is located in Danville at the former Sheriff’s Residence and Jail, another building located on the National Register of Historic Places. The collection in the museum includes important artifacts from the region as well as in-depth military history.

Plainfield is the biggest city in Hendricks County with a population of 27,600 based on the most recent census though more current estimates predict the population is much closer to 32,900 now. Plainfield has a sizable warehouse district on the east end of town that employs a number of locals. It is close to the Indianapolis International Airport and the warehouse district reportedly supports nearly half of all warehouse jobs in Central Indiana.

Plainfield also receives a major boost from tourism due to its proximity to Indianapolis International Airport. The city currently has close to 20 hotels as it provides quick access, not only the airport, but other regions located along Interstate 70.

When local residents are not working many of them can be found at The Shops at Perry Crossing. The 600,000 square foot open-air retail mall was constructed in 2005 and also had a significant multi-million dollar renovation in 2015.

Hendricks County also features the Plainfield Recreation and Aquatic Center. The 11,300 square foot rec center hosts a variety of sports including three basketball courts, indoor track, fitness center and an indoor play area. The aquatic center is one of the most popular attractions during humid summers. The 3.1 acre waterpark is tropical-themed and features numerous water slides and splash park. A 900-foot lazy-river also meanders through the aquatic center.

Lastly, Hendricks County is home to over 20 miles of trail system, including the popular Vandalia Trail. The Vandalia Trail goes for five miles through the center of town. Additionally, Hummel Park also provides many opportunities for outdoor recreation.
