Franklin County is a very sizable region of Washington State located in the eastern portion of its territory. The total amount of land in the county is 1,265 square miles and it is occupied by over 86,600 people. The county seat is Pasco.
Franklin County exists in a very scenic part of Eastern Washington and has recorded origins dating all the way back to 1883. The territory borders Adams County to the north, Walla Walla County and Columbia County to the southeast, Whitman County to the east, Benton County to the southwest and Grant County to the northwest.
The area was previously occupied by Native Americans who hunted and fished salmon on its land. Its connection to the Columbia River and Snake River provided ample opportunities for game. Natives were also known to trade with the first arriving settlers from the east. Franklin County is characterized by its extremely rich soil. It has been harvested since its early days and the agriculture industry remains a stable in modern society.
Pasco is the most noteworthy city in Franklin County due to its size. The city has a population of nearly 73,000. It is considered a part of the Tri-Cities in Washington state along with Kennewick and Richland. Together the three cities compose a metropolitan area of nearly 280,000 people. Pasco is growing steadily as the 2010 census reported a population of 59,800 while 2017 estimates placed the population around 73,000.
Part of the draw for Franklin County is A) its location and B) its agricultural industry. Agriculture remains very strong in Pasco. Several of the largest food processing companies in the world have headquarters in Pasco.
The Tri-Cities area is known for its outdoor recreational activities. The territory provides many waterfront parks along the Columbia River. Fishing, boating, water-skiing and wakeboarding are all common with locals. The city is also not far from Sacajawea State Park. The 284-acre park meets at the confluence of the Columbia River and Snake River. The Sacagawea Heritage Trail is used by countless locals.
Franklin County is also known for its rich history, which is on display at two outstanding museums. The County Historical Museum and Three Rivers Children’s Museum are top tourist draws within the area. Bird watching is common at the McNary National Wildlife Refuge. Located on the eastern bank of the Columbia River, it features rare sights of endangered birds in their natural habitat.
Lastly, Palouse Falls State Park is also located within the boundaries of Franklin County. The 105-acre state park was established for camping and sightseeing. The rare Palouse Falls are visited by thousands each year. The falls drop nearly 200 feet.
Growth in Franklin County has been strong over the last few decades and continues to look promising.
