About Douglas County

Established in 1883, Douglas County, Washington was named after U.S. Senator Steven Douglas of Illinois. He was the chairman of the commission of territories when the County was created. Eventually, in 1886, the town of Waterville was made into the county seat, and the current courthouse was built in 1905.

Therefore, Douglas County is rural and driven by its agriculture. Wheat, apples, pears, and cherries are the primary crops grown in the region. The land is diverse. Its centralized location provides quick access to nearly every other part of the state. Seattle is about a three-hour drive to the west. Spokane is about two and a half hours to the east. Daroga State Park and Orondo River Park are also located in Douglas County. Daroga State Park is a 90-acre piece of land reserved for camping near the bank of the Columbia River.
