Dearborn County is situated in the southeastern corner of Indiana. The eastern boundary of the county is also where the state line between Indiana and Ohio meet. Additionally, the county is not far from the Indiana and Kentucky state line. The county has a population of 50,000. It was created in 1803 after getting separated from nearby Hamilton County.

The total land size of the area is 307 square miles. The county seat and largest community in the county is Lawrenceburg. Dearborn County is often grouped in with the Cincinnati-Middletown metropolitan statistical area which includes cities in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

Dearborn County has a unique history. The land was previously part of Ohio when Hamilton County managed it. However, a treaty that was signed in 1795 carved out a wedge of land that became part of Indiana Territory. The area received the nickname “The Gore” because of its special shape and history.

Today “The Gore” also includes parts of Franklin, Ohio, Randolph, Switzerland, Union, Fayette and Wayne counties. However, Dearborn County was the originator of “The Gore” and subsequent counties were used to divide up the land into smaller units within Indiana.

Lawrenceburg has long been the hub for important commerce and other activities within the region. However, the town has retained its small town charm, with a reported population of only 5,000 people. Lawrenceberg represents an important railroad junction that connects important lines in the area. The railroad has played an important role in Lawrenceburg historically as well.

The small town is commonly linked to the Ohio River, which flows at the southern boundary of the county. It is also within very close in proximity to Cincinnati, Ohio. Residents of Lawrenceburg can reach Cincinnati in approximately 40 minutes.

Dearborn County offers a diverse economy. The Tanners Creek Power Station, AEP, is located in Lawrenceburg and employs a large number of local residents. The area was previously known as a major contributor to the production of whiskey and MGP Indiana (previously Seagram’s) is still headquartered in Lawrenceburg. There are other important manufacturers in the county that help create jobs.

Dearborn County is highlighted by a number of popular area attractions. The Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg is a riverboat casino that serves as the primary gambling and entertainment operation outside Cincinnati. The riverboat can support a capacity of nearly 9,000 guests and features a World Poker Tour gaming room.

Other attractions within the area include the Oxbow Nature Conservancy, Lawrenceburg Speedway, Hillforest Victorian House Museum, City of Spires Historical Museum and Carnegie Hall of Moores Hill College. A number of events are held annually at the Lawrenceburg Fairgrounds. Dearborn County is also home to more than 30 noteworthy public parks. The county also supports five golf courses including Sugar Ridge Country Club and Hidden Valley Lake Golf Club.

In the winter, Dearborn County is profiled by the Perfect North Slopes ski area. The small alpine ski resort consists of four magic carpet runs, two rope tows and five separate chairlifts. All in all, the ski area features 23 different trails with most of the runs catered toward beginners or intermediate skiers.

Dearborn County is also home to the communities of Aurora (population 3,800), Dillsboro (population 1,135) and Moores Hill (population 600). It also features an impressive list of buildings present on the National Register of Historic Places.
