About Chelan County

Originally home to the Wenatchee tribe, who inhabited the area for hundreds of years before the arrival of European conquerors. Named after the Chelan Indian word for “deep water.” The name was most likely a reference to Chelan Lake which has a depth of about 1,486 feet.

Today the county is home to 23 wineries within the county. In addition, the biggest employment industries in the county are in the healthcare, retail trade, and agriculture industries. Therefore, the most common occupations come from the administrative support, sales, and management occupations.

When it comes to education, the county is served by six different school districts which provide education for students ranging from pre-K to 12th grade. The county also has the Wenatchee Valley College, and Washington State University’s extension.
