Burke County is based in eastern Georgia and is just south of Augusta. Its eastern boundaries are also part of the Georgia and South Carolina state line. The county has a population of 23,315 and a total land size of 835 square miles. The county seat is Waynesboro. Burke County is considered part of the Augusta and Richmond GA-SC metropolitan statistical area.

It was established in 1777, making it one of the original counties of the state of Georgia. Burke County has a rich history that dates back to its origins with the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). The region was well known for its large cotton plantations and has continued to serve as a dependable source for agriculture.

Waynesboro is the largest community in Burke County, though it is still relatively small with a population of under 6,000 people. Waynesboro has the nickname “The Bird Dog Capital of the World”. Bird dog refers to a term for pointing dogs like retrievers and flushing dogs which are known for having natural instincts toward tracking down and hunting small game.

Waynesboro was officially incorporated in 1883, however, European Americans lived in the area well before the Revolutionary War and dates back to the 18th century. It is named after a U.S. General who served during the Revolutionary War. It is also reported that President George Washington spent a night in Waynesboro, and a stone monument on Liberty Street continues to celebrate the special event. Other history can be found in the Waynesboro Commercial Historic District.

The local economy is driven by both agriculture and energy development. In 2010, President Obama announced that federal funds would be dedicated toward a pair of nuclear reactors in Burke County. The conditional commitment is the first planned nuclear units in more than three decades. Burke County already has a couple of other nuclear power plants which helps create jobs for the local economy.

The Burke County Museum is a place you should visit if you are new to the area. It documents the deep history of Burke County from life on a plantation to its nuclear energy development phase. Additionally, the County School District manages all the public schools in the territory. There are currently two elementary schools, one primary school, one middle school, one alternative school, and one high school. The county also has a few different private schools offering K-12 education. The Bears high school athletic teams are a popular draw for locals. Waynesboro also has a satellite campus of Augusta Technical College.

Athletics are a celebrated tradition in the small county. Johnathan Broxton (MLB), Cornelius Washington (NFL), and Beau Jack (boxing) are a few examples of residents that went on to pro careers. The county is also conveniently located less than an hour from Augusta, Georgia. Every year the city plays host to the most iconic golf event in the country – The Masters tournament. The Masters is one of four major PGA championships and takes place every year in April. It is the only major tournament that is held at the same location each year, the Augusta National Golf Club.
