One could define Benton County as a land of rivers. This South Central Washington county is located near the junction of the Columbia River, Snake River, and Yakima River. Formed in 1847, it has since expanded with a reported population of more than 175,000.

The largest city in Benton County is Kennewick which has a population of 74,000, according to the most recent census. Prosser serves as the county seat and is remarkably smaller with a population of only 5,700. The other cities that are situated in Benton are Richland (population 48,000), Benton City (population 3,000) and West Richland (population 11,800).

It is little wonder Benton County is such a popular destination for prospective new homeowners. The landscape is gorgeous with the Columbia River serving as its north, south, as well as east boundaries. It is one of the great agricultural areas in not only Washington, but the nation. The produce produced in the area includes alfalfa, wheat, and potatoes.

Benton County is also considered a hotbed for wine enthusiasts. There are a number of local, as well as national, wineries that line rich lands near the Columbia River. As a result, it has drawn a lot of retirees that want to settle down as well as a thriving 20s and 30s crowd.

The area is also home to the notorious Manhattan Project by the U.S. government. Post World War II the U.S. Army purchased more than 600 square miles of territory and began secretly developing plutonium for atomic bombs. The nuclear power industry continues to serve as an industry of great wealth and support for the region and many are employed by these companies.

Residents of Benton County are known for liking to stay active. In addition to several protected nature reserves, the cities of Benton are also thriving. The county features some truly beautiful golf courses and residents like to participate in a wide range of outdoor activities.

Columbia Park is another good representation of the local community. The 400-acre recreational area is very popular among locals and also draws outsiders. It is located in Kennewick. The park features over four miles of scenic shoreline along the Columbia River. Families love to spend time at the self-titled “Playground of Dreams”.

Another popular sight to take in all the wonders of Columbia River is Hanford Reach National Monument. The preserve includes the Hanford site, the location of the first nuclear bombs. Today the setting is drastically different with pretty, blue waters and White Bluffs dominating the landscape. Jet boating is a very popular recreational activity.

Benton County is growing and the number of reported households from the 2010 census (68,600) has been climbing. There are new and exciting homes as well as historical homes available for those looking to make their home in Benton.

The makeup of the county features a good mix of young couples, families with children, non-families, and single dwellers. The average household size is 2.66, and average family size 3.17. The median age of residents in Benton County is 35.6 years old.
